Let's examine over time the targeting of the Clintons by the GOP. The list includes the following:
- Travel Office
- Monica Lewinsky
- eMail Server
Special councils were brought on each and every one and at the end of the day, the only thing that was found improper was Bill Clinton lying under oath about an affair with Monica Lewinsky. The affair in and of itself is not a reason for the council to exist, so I believe the council was acting beyond the reach of the government at the time and therefore the lie was not something that was improper. Monica was a consenting adult and there was nothing in the investigation to show that he used his influence to help her career.
The Whitewater and Travel Office investigation came up with zero as well. In fact, Ken Starr was recently cited as stating
“That having been said, the idea of this redemptive process afterwards, we have certainly seen that powerfully” in Mr. Clinton’s postpresidency, he continued, adding, “President Carter set a very high standard, which President Clinton clearly continues to follow.”
He called Mr. Clinton “the most gifted politician of the baby boomer generation.”
“His genuine empathy for human beings is absolutely clear,” Mr. Starr said. “It is powerful, it is palpable, and the folks of Arkansas really understood that about him — that he genuinely cared. The ‘I feel your pain’ is absolutely genuine.”
The Benghazi findings were just released today and though the typical GOP spin was placed on the findings there was nothing that pointed to any improprieties on the part of Secretary of State Clinton. The last scandal to address is the use of a private email server. While in hindsight the use of the email server could be deemed improper, there is nothing so far to warrant its flagging as anything other than a mistake that could have been caught by having clear and concise policies within the State Department on email use. Colin Powell used a private email address to conduct State Department business, and this could be concluded as setting the precedent for Clinton.
All attempts by the GOP to target the Clintons have missed their mark. The propagation of lies on the campaign trail by Trump and the GOP should be met with equal voicing of the cold hard facts.
