What is that song being played?

advertisement

Ever listen to the radio, walk a store, or sit in a restaurant or bar and said "what is the name of that song being played? and who is the artist?" Well now you can with the help of Shazam, an application that appeared on the Apple app store when it was launched recently.

The application just works, no better way of putting it. You hear a song being played, you switch to the app on your iPhone and hit the "tag now" button. Shazam will listen to the song for about 10 seconds, send the information off to some central server and about 3-5 seconds later come back with Artist, Title and Album.

I am a huge geek, in fact I direct IT for my company, and this app blows my mind away. It is so powerful and well written. It hasn't missed a song yet, and it is smart enough to pick the song bits out in a convertible doing 50 mph. I am just floored by this app. If you have an iPhone check it out, if you don't have an iPhone this may be a good reason to get one.

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

And it is "FREE", and if you want it provides a direct link to purchase the song from iTunes.

I have to agree that this is an incredible program. I've actually used it several times now in "real world" situations to find music that I liked.

I'd highly recommend this one to any music lover out there with an iPhone.
